Overreaching
A short-term state of accumulated fatigue that temporarily decreases performance.
Overreaching is a temporary accumulation of training stress that reduces performance in the short term but leads to supercompensation after recovery. Functional overreaching is planned and followed by a deload, resulting in performance gains. Non-functional overreaching takes longer to recover from and may not lead to improvement. It differs from overtraining in duration and severity.
Examples
- Intentional high-volume phase before deload
- Decreased performance after 3 hard weeks
- Recovery from functional overreaching: 1-2 weeks
