DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)
Muscle soreness appearing 24-72 hours after exercise.
DOMS is the muscle soreness and stiffness felt 1-3 days after unaccustomed or intense exercise. It is caused by micro-damage to muscle fibers, particularly from eccentric contractions. DOMS is not a reliable indicator of workout quality or muscle growth. It decreases with repeated exposure to the same stimulus.
Examples
- Sore quads 2 days after squats
- Peaks 24-72 hours post-exercise
- Lessens with repeated training
