Trap Bar (Hex Bar)

A hexagonal barbell that allows you to stand inside while lifting.

The trap bar (hex bar) is a hexagonal barbell you stand inside, with handles on either side. It is excellent for deadlifts (reduces low back stress, more quad-dominant), farmer's carries, shrugs, and jumps. The neutral grip and centered load make it more accessible than conventional deadlifts for many people.

Why the geometry matters

A hexagonal or diamond frame you stand inside, with neutral handles at your sides. Standing in the middle of the load rather than behind it puts the weight in line with your centre of mass, which shortens the moment arm on the lower back and lets the knees travel further forward. The result sits between a deadlift and a squat: more quadriceps, less hip and lower-back demand, and a position most people find far easier to hold.

How to use it

It is the most forgiving way to train a heavy hinge, which makes it a strong default for beginners, for athletes whose sport is not powerlifting, and for anyone whose lower back does not tolerate high-volume conventional deadlifting. Most trap bars have high and low handles; the high handles reduce the range and are the easier starting point. It also loads farmer's walks and jumps better than any straight bar.

Common mistakes

Expecting it to carry over directly to a competition deadlift, which it does not do reliably — it is a different pattern, not a variation. Using the high handles permanently and never progressing to the low ones. And squatting it rather than hinging it without deciding which you meant to do: both are legitimate, but drifting between them from rep to rep means you are not progressing either.

Examples

  • Hexagonal shape to stand inside
  • Neutral grip handles
  • Great for deadlift beginners
