BMI (Body Mass Index)
A ratio of weight to height used to categorize body size.
BMI is calculated as weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. It categorizes people as underweight (<18.5), normal (18.5-24.9), overweight (25-29.9), or obese (30+). However, BMI does not differentiate muscle from fat, making it unreliable for muscular individuals. It is a population-level tool, not individual assessment.
Examples
- BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
- Does not account for muscle mass
- Muscular people may have high BMI
