Body Composition

The ratio of fat mass to lean mass (muscle, bone, water) in your body.

Body composition describes what your body is made of - specifically the proportions of fat mass versus lean mass (muscle, bone, organs, water). Unlike scale weight alone, body composition gives a complete picture of health and fitness. Improving body composition means gaining muscle and/or losing fat, regardless of what happens to total weight.

Examples

  • 20% body fat, 80% lean mass
  • DEXA scan for accurate measurement
  • Body recomposition: gaining muscle while losing fat
