HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training)
Alternating between intense bursts of exercise and rest or low-intensity periods.
HIIT involves short periods of maximum effort followed by rest or low-intensity recovery. Typical protocols use 20-40 seconds of work followed by equal or longer rest. HIIT is time-efficient, burns significant calories, and creates an afterburn effect (EPOC) where you continue burning calories post-workout. It can be done with any exercise modality.
Examples
- 30 seconds sprint, 30 seconds rest x 10
- Tabata: 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off x 8
- 20-minute HIIT session
