BMI (Body Mass Index)
A ratio of weight to height used to categorize body weight status.
BMI is calculated as weight (kg) divided by height squared (m²). It categorizes people as underweight (<18.5), normal (18.5-24.9), overweight (25-29.9), or obese (30+). While useful for population health studies, BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, making it unreliable for athletes and muscular individuals.
Examples
- BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
- Doesn't distinguish muscle from fat
- Muscular people may have "obese" BMI
