Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)
Training with bands or cuffs that restrict venous blood flow from muscles.
Blood flow restriction (BFR) training uses cuffs or bands to partially occlude venous return while maintaining arterial flow. This creates metabolic stress, allowing significant muscle growth with very light weights (20-30% 1RM). BFR is useful during injury rehabilitation or deload phases. Proper cuff pressure and placement are critical for safety.
Examples
- Leg extensions at 30% 1RM with BFR cuffs
- Cuff pressure: 40-80% arterial occlusion
- High reps (15-30) with light weight
