Metabolic Stress

The accumulation of metabolites in muscles during exercise that contributes to muscle growth.

Metabolic stress refers to the buildup of lactate, hydrogen ions, and other metabolites during high-rep, short-rest training. This creates the burning sensation and pump you feel during exercise. While mechanical tension is the primary driver of hypertrophy, metabolic stress is thought to be a secondary growth mechanism.

Examples

  • High-rep sets with short rest periods
  • The burning sensation during sets
  • Blood flow restriction training
