Movement Pattern
A category of movements sharing similar biomechanics.
Movement patterns are foundational movement categories that exercises fall into: squat (knee-dominant), hinge (hip-dominant), push, pull, carry, and rotation. Balanced programming includes exercises from all patterns. Training by movement pattern rather than body part can improve function and ensure no movements are neglected.
Examples
- Squat pattern: squats, lunges, step-ups
- Hinge pattern: deadlifts, RDLs, kettlebell swings
- Push pattern: bench press, overhead press, push-ups
