Ketosis

A metabolic state where the body primarily burns fat and ketones for energy.

Ketosis occurs when carbohydrate intake is very low (typically under 50g/day), forcing the body to use fat for fuel. The liver converts fat into ketone bodies, which can fuel most tissues including the brain. Ketosis is the basis of ketogenic diets. It can aid fat loss but isn't necessary for body composition improvement.

Examples

  • Achieved at <50g carbs/day typically
  • Measured with ketone strips
  • Takes 2-7 days to achieve
