HRV-Guided Training
Using heart rate variability data to adjust daily training intensity based on recovery status.
HRV-guided training uses daily heart rate variability measurements (typically taken first thing in the morning) to determine whether the body is recovered enough for hard training or should take an easier day. When HRV is above your personal baseline, it suggests good readiness for intense work. When below baseline, it signals accumulated fatigue. Research shows HRV-guided programming can improve performance outcomes compared to fixed training plans by auto-regulating intensity based on individual recovery.
Examples
- Morning HRV reading above baseline — train hard
- Below-baseline HRV — reduce intensity by 10-20%
- 7-day rolling average for trend analysis
