Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS)
The process by which the body builds new muscle proteins.
Muscle protein synthesis is the metabolic process where amino acids are incorporated into muscle proteins, leading to muscle growth. MPS is elevated after resistance training and protein consumption. For optimal results, distribute protein intake (25-40g) across 4-5 meals throughout the day. MPS must exceed muscle protein breakdown for net muscle gain.
Examples
- MPS elevated for 24-48 hours post-workout
- 25-40g protein per meal to maximize MPS
- Leucine triggers MPS
