BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)
The calories your body burns at complete rest to maintain basic functions.
Basal Metabolic Rate is the energy your body needs to stay alive - breathing, circulation, cell production, etc. It typically accounts for 60-70% of TDEE. BMR is influenced by age, sex, height, weight, and muscle mass. More muscle mass increases BMR because muscle tissue requires more energy to maintain than fat tissue.
Examples
- BMR of 1,800 calories for a 180lb male
- Mifflin-St Jeor equation for calculating BMR
- Higher muscle mass = higher BMR
