Training to Failure
Performing reps until you cannot complete another with proper form.
Training to failure means continuing a set until you cannot perform another rep with good technique. While it can be effective for muscle growth, always training to failure can lead to excessive fatigue and impair recovery. Most research suggests stopping 1-3 reps shy of failure (RIR - Reps in Reserve) for most sets, with occasional failure training for intensity.
Examples
- Completing 10 reps when you could not do an 11th
- Reaching muscular failure on the last set
- Using spotters for safe failure training
