Cable Machine
A machine using cables and pulleys to provide smooth, constant resistance.
Cable machines use weight stacks connected via cables and pulleys to provide smooth resistance through any range of motion. The constant tension and adjustable angles make them excellent for isolation work, rotational movements, and exercises where dumbbells or barbells are awkward. They complement free weights well.
Why cables behave differently
A weight stack redirected through a pulley applies tension along the cable rather than straight down, which means resistance can be delivered from any angle and stays roughly constant through the whole range. A dumbbell fly has almost no resistance at the top; a cable fly has tension throughout. That constant tension, and the freedom to set the line of pull, is what cables offer that free weights structurally cannot.
How to use them
They are at their best on isolation work where the free-weight version has a dead spot: flyes, lateral raises, triceps extensions, face pulls and any rotational or anti-rotation trunk work. Adjustable-height dual-pulley setups are the most versatile. Because the resistance is smooth and the load is easy to change, cables are also the natural home for drop sets.
Common mistakes
Standing in the wrong place. The line of pull relative to your body is the exercise, so drifting a foot closer to the stack between sets changes the resistance profile and makes the sets incomparable. The other is treating stack numbers as absolute: pulley ratios differ between machines, so 40 on one machine is not 40 on another, and only your own progression on a given machine means anything.
