Sarcoplasm
The fluid and non-contractile components within muscle fibers.
Sarcoplasm is the cytoplasm of muscle fibers, containing glycogen, enzymes, mitochondria, and other components. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy increases these non-contractile elements, increasing muscle size without proportional strength gains. This type of hypertrophy is emphasized by higher rep, metabolically demanding training.
Examples
- Fluid component of muscle cells
- Stores glycogen for energy
- Increased with high-rep training
